Oakwood Hyderabad, which recently turned one, is hosting its first food festival – a Mexican Food Fiesta. I’ve been to Oakwood a few times before, and the fare dished out by Chef Brijesh Kumar has always been impressive. So, when I was invited by the hotel to experience their maiden food festival, I walked in with high expectations.

The food festival is being organised at Oakleaf – Oakwood’s all-day dining restaurant. There are a dozen dishes on the festival menu – evenly split across veg and non-veg. We started off with Veg Fajita Nachos – tortilla chips served on a bed of refried beans, cheese, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The Nachos were every bit as delicious as that description read – spicy, tangy, and gooey. There are two Enchiladas on the menu. Enchiladas Colima that comes with Chicken or Beef topped with Verde Sauce. Fiesta Enchilada has a mix of veggies including roasted squash, mixed greens, carrot, cucumber, smoky roasted tomatoes.

The next dish I tasted was Layered Tortilla Pie. It’s quite a simple dish – tortilla is layered with refried beans, jalapenos, cheese, and picante sauce and then baked. It’s served with a topping of sour cream and guacamole. The end result is both gorgeous and delectable.

Oakleaf is serving the Carne Asada as a sub. Beef steaks are sliced and served in a baguette along with grilled sweet onions. I’m usually not a fan of subs using baguette as it tends to be quite dry, but the dollops of sauce and the juicy slices of beef not only masked the dryness of the baguette but also benefitted from the crunchy crust of the bread. There’s only one Burrito on offer and that comes with a filling of chicken, red beans, and Mexican rice. I love Burritos that are hearty and spirited, and this one didn’t disappoint. The final dish to arrive was the Silver Pomfret De Mexicana – a baked silver pomfret stuffed with veggies, served with Mexican Rice and Sour Cream. Oakleaf has one of the best Pomfret dishes in the city – a pan fried Pomfret with bacon bits and shrimps. While that dish is still my pick, the De Mexicana does absolutely nothing wrong and is quite a treat.

I walked in with high expectations and was thrilled with what was offered. Vibrant, beautiful, and delectable Mexican food. The portion sizes are good, and most of the dishes are priced between Rs. 400 and Rs. 600 (Pomfret is Rs. 750). The Mexican Food Festival is on until the 2nd October at Oakleaf from 11 AM to 11 PM, until 2nd October.
